Halftones Explained (Simple Version)
DTF prints solid ink. It can't print "half see-through." So if your design has fades, soft shadows, glows or smoke effects, those semi-transparent pixels can print blotchy or feel stiff.
What a halftone is
A halftone turns a fade into lots of tiny dots. Big dots up close look solid, small dots spread apart look faded. From a normal distance, your eye sees a smooth fade, but every dot is printed at full strength.
When you need it
- Gradients that fade into the shirt
- Drop shadows and outer glows
- Vintage or distressed looks
- Photos you want to blend into the garment
When you don't
Solid logos, text, and designs with hard edges are good as-is.
Easy ways to do it
- Photoshop: use a halftone filter or action on the faded areas.
- Free / online tools: search "halftone generator" and apply it only to the fade.

Tip: Bigger dots (lower LPI, around 35 to 45) press and wash better than super tiny dots.
